1 Little Miracle

Meet Mila short for Milagro which means MIRACLE. This sweet little baby wasn’t expected to live through her 1st 9 months in the womb but she wasn’t expected to be alive at birth either. Mila is a fighter. She was born with trisomy 18 and a cleft lip and pallate. Her condition is a rare form and  he mother knows that each day, each breath this little baby gets is a gift. I was introduced to this family through Hinds Hospice. She is a hospice baby. I volunteer for an organization called Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep and this organization takes photos for babies 25 weeks gestation up to 1 years old that are terminal or have passed away. Yes this is not a easy thing to volunteer for but the gift of memories that I know I can provide for them is priceless. There are not enough of us volunteers and if you or a photographer you know is interested in serving somewhere with their talents please let me know. Baby Mila is a fighter. I was blessed to meet her and blessed to meet her family that is being so amazing in this time. The strength and hope that they displayed was amazing. My prayers go out for this little family and this sweet little girl. Thank you for allowing me to capture such precious times.

The Art of a Candid Picture

Taking this opportuinty to talk about the art of a candid picture since I am having a photo contest this week on my facebook page with this theme .

Definition of Candid: Informal or natural; especially caught off guard or unprepared.

Candid photos can look like a lot things. An emotion, action, a infomal non posed picture, an animal, or a scene. Most people are drawn to candids because they tell more of a story then the straight on posed shot. It takes a special photographer I believe to tell a story with a posed picture. Hard to do. Anyone can pick up a camera and tell someone to stand still, smile and snap the picture. Knowing how to manipulate your camera fast enough to capture a “moment” that is unprepared or caught of guard is tricky. So here is how I strive (strive being the key word in this sentence) to create a candid at a photo shoot.

If you have had a photo shoot with me you know that I sort of shoot quietly except for when I want your attention. That’s the “fly on the wall effect” I might ask a question or ask you to do something specific. This is in hopes that it may lead to a candid moment. Easier to capture a candid moment when you have more then one person as the subject. Families, weddings, siblings, groups are easier to find the candid moment. You have to be ready for the unexpected. Never stop panning and shooting. This is why I love a telephoto lens. I can stand back get out of the way and let things happen. I love a prime lens (fixed length) but I find myself always grabbing my telephoto lens. I can back out of a shot and back in without being intrusive.  With kids or single subject it’s a lot harder. This is when I become a goof ball, running and chasing kiddos, becoming a part of their world so that when I pull back they are still comfortable with me to allow me “in” while behind the lens. Many of you leave the shoot thinking I’m a little wacky well it’s all for the shot I promise. When you book a shoot I usually ask you what we can do together. This has multiple purposes but one is so that I have the opportunity to shoot candidly. It is the style I prefer. Below are some samples of some candids I took this fall while at a workshop. That was pretty much all I got because I was in the back behind 12 other photographers.  I was mostly using my 70-300 mm lens.  If you are still interested in shooting a photo for the contest. Head over to Facebook and read the notes for entry info. It ends on the 13th. Hope this helps.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone! 2010 was an unbelievable year of growth and heartache for me. I was able to do many things that i dreamed of and I also had some of the hardest professional struggles ever. I know that every situation is a blessing wether good or bad but I am ready for a little less “hard” in 2011. Some changes and some exciting things to come. Something NEW: My office has been converted to a full functioning photography office. A cozy place to meet with my clients and go over orders, viewing, and product selection. It was fun to redesign the look of my creative space. Generating ideas for shoots is always tricky as it’s hard to maitain being genuine and not just “copying” what is already created out there. My creative idea folder is full of thoughts and sketches. I am looking forward to presenting them to you through photos. COMING UP on February 5th is the next Client Workshop. I have helped so many buy cameras and it’s very fulfilling for me to teach you how to use them. (I was a teacher for 4 years if you didn’t know that.) Flyer is below. Spots are limited so if you are thinking of coming email me. Last but not least I am doing a photo contest finishing up on the 13th for my Facebook fans, likes, fans… I don’t know what they are called any more but if you are interested in winning gift certificates from CMP check it out. Hope you had a wonderful Holiday season and I look forward to catchin up with you all in the New Year!

Lindsay & Charles

This shoot was supposed to be somewhere else but thanks to rain we had to move it to another day another location. When they came into town for the shoot the rain followed them. But oh well…right? It made for an interesting adventure and we had fun trying to manuver around the elements. Best part was ending over a glass of wine and chit chatting with them about our lives. I have been married for over 11 years and it was fun to share with them about my life. Feels like I was in their shoes not long ago. Thank you Lindsay and Charles for inviting me into your lives, your willingness to go with the flow and for the many laughs we shared. Looking forward to many more.

A Fall Favorite – Barsoom Family

Now that their christmas cards are out I finally get to BLOG this shoot. One of my favorite shoots this whole year. Here’s a few reasons why it’s a favorite.

 1. This family has become dear family friends and I love being with them. 2. I got to travel to Monterey / Carmel for this one. 3. This shoot was a 3 hour continual “laugh fest” as we tried our darndest to keep mama’s hair dry and umbrellas from either blowing away or floating out to sea. 4. They are willing to do almost anything I throw at them. 5. I avoided the aftermath of laying in poison ivy. (Didn’t realize what I was rolling in till after) 6. The Yummy long dinner that followed – thanks Todd!

These girls  always look amazing in their hats. They have been wearing hats since they were born. Here are some of my favorites from the day but I honestly could have posted them all. Soo much fun with you guys. The adventures just keep getting better each year. I am extremely blessed to have the opportunity to be your photographer and better yet your friend.

There is a story behind this one; I had another vision  come to me about Carmen. When you know Carmen you know that everything in her life has meaning. Everything includes the nick knacks in her draws, the very top shelf of her closet, even the the boxes in the attic. She loves to hold on to the “sentiments” of life everything else ,”can go”. One day I told her she resmbles to me an antique broach. The kind that has been around for generations but still looks like something you would see in an Anthropology magazine. So… I told her to bring some meaningful knick nacks that could fit into a bowl and bring it to the beach. I had a vision of it all laying in a wooden bowl on the beach. Again, thinking i was nuts she brought it all along. What you see in this pictures is everything from sentiments from her grandmother all the way down to memorabilia of her daughter. This picture has been blown up onto a canvas and will hang amongst a gallery of her favorites.
